La Sombra del Agua es el cuarto material de larga duración de Tajak grabado en Coatepec, Veracruz de marzo a diciembre del 2020, durante una residencia en aislación en el bosque.
El proceso de grabación de este disco fue muy distinto a experiencias previas. Anteriormente se grabaron de manera apresurada en uno o dos días de estudio. Esta vez, además de no grabarse en estudio, fue un proceso mucho más paciente, meticuloso e íntimo. Los esqueletos (batería, bajo y guitarra) fueron grabados al aire libre al costado del río Pixquiac (detalle poco convencional), posteriormente fueron varias semanas de editar y grabar overdubs. Se utilizaron más instrumentos de los que se acostumbraban, manteniendo el formato típico de guitarra, bajo, batería y voz, pero agregando abundantes capas de texturas, grabaciones de campo, sintetizadores, y otros instrumentos como ocarina, sitar, flauta, docerola, tambor de trueno y efectos de cinta (una aportación muy importante por parte de Pedro Tirado/Servicios Eléctricos). Detrás de toda la música se alcanzan a escuchar los sonidos ambientales de la mañana, la tarde y la noche en el bosque de niebla.
Es el primer disco de Tajak que en su totalidad está escrito en español, en cuanto a composición se denota la influencia que el bosque llegó a tener sobre éste. En muchas de las piezas se alcanzan a apreciar las contestaciones de la música a la naturaleza y viceversa.
“Formamos parte del ambiente a un grado en el que los insectos contestaban a los sintetizadores, las atmósferas de guitarra, las voces y los platillos con delay simulaban la fluidez del agua que corría por el río y descendía de las numerosas lluvias que nos tocaron presenciar. El bajo, las percusiones y los riffs se convirtieron en la realidad que desde hace tiempo buscábamos encontrar en un lugar así, al igual como las letras tomaron forma de nuestras experiencias, pero a la vez tenían completa relación con el pueblo de la Orduña que nos acogió, la fábrica, las enseñanzas de Don Marcial y esas caminatas a la tiendita enfrente del parque para rellenar las botellas de cañita,” cuenta ñois.
El resultado son siete piezas que comienzan con estructuras muy sólidas, pero que eventualmente se descomponen y se derriten hasta convertirse en una masa de sonidos fractálicos que danzan entre lo espacial y lo terrenal.
El disco fue lanzadp por la disquera estadounidense Little Cloud Records, el sello británico The Acid Test Recordings y Hole Records en México.

La Sombra del Agua is the fourth studio album by Tajak.
It was recorded in Coatepec, Veracruz, from March till December 2020 during an isolated residency in the cloud forest.
The recording process was quite different from previous experiences. Former albums were recorded much quicker, in one or two days of studio sessions. In this latest album, aside from not being recorded in a studio, it was a much more patient, meticulous and intimate process. The main tracks (drums, bass and guitar) were recorded outdoors at the side of the Pixquiac river, a fact which is not very usual. After recording the main tracks, there were several weeks spent afterwards editing, recording overdubs and mixing. In this case a lot more instruments were used than they normally use. They kept the traditional bass, guitar, drums and vocals format, then added lots of layers of texture including field recordings, synths and other instruments like ocarina, sitar, flute, twelve string guitar, thunder drum and tape effects, the last one being a very important and special contribution from Pedro Tirado/Servicios Eléctricos.
In the background you can hear the ambient sounds from the morning, afternoon and night at the cloud forest.
It’s the first Tajak album written completely in Spanish. The influence of the cloud forest was very present in the composition of the album. In many of the songs you can perceive the interactions and conversations between the music and the surrounding outdoors environment.
“We were so immersed and a part of the environment on such level that the insects would answer to our synthesizers, the atmospheres of the guitar, the vocals and the delayed cymbals would simulate the fluidity of the water that ran through the river and descended from all the rain that we witnessed. The bass, percussions and riffs turned into a reality which we were seeking to find in such a place, same with the lyrics which took form of our experiences, but at the same time had a complete relationship with the little town of La Orduña that welcomed us, the factory (where we lived and recorded), the teachings of Don Marcial and those walks to the store to buy aguardiente” ñois says.
The ending result are seven songs which start with solid structures that are eventually unassembled and molten into a soundscape of fractalic sounds that dance between the spacial and the earthly.
